DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SIMPLE AND COMPOUND MICROSCOPE

Difference between Simple and Compound Microscope

S. No

Simple Microscope

Compound or Light Microscope

1

Invented and designed by Anton Van Leeuwenhoek in 1670.

Designed by Hans and Zacharias Janssen in 1950.

2

Uses One lens (Ocular lens) to magnify objects.

Uses Two lenses to magnify objects (Ocular lens and an Objective lens).

3

Structure - Stand is small, hollow cylindrical attached to the base and is used to hold the microscope.

Structure - Arm is curved and is used to hold the microscope.

4

Contains single eye piece

Contains single eye piece or double eye piece.

5

Light source is natural

Light source is Natural and sometimes Illuminator is a source of light

6

Mirror is Concave - Reflecting type.

Mirror is plane at one side and Concave at other side.

7

Condenser lens is absent.

Condenser lens is present which is used to adjust the intensity of light for magnification of object.

8

Total magnification is limited to the magnification of the single lens used.

Total magnification is the multiplication of the eyepiece and objective magnifications, hence a Higher magnification.

9

Magnification power is up to 300 X

Magnification power is up to 2000 X

10

Adjustment of Magnification is not available.

Adjustment of Magnification is  available.

11

Has only one adjustment screw that is used to move the limb up and down for focusing an object.

Has Coarse adjustment screw (for rapid focusing an object) and Fine adjustment screw (for fine and sharp focusing).

12

Can only be used in simple ways such as enlarging small letters while reading.

Has a wide range of use such as in studying the structure of different objects, e.g. details of cells in living organisms.
